Ghibli's story
Where do we start with Ghibli ?! The story of how this boy came to be with us is a long one! It begins when we saw his grandmother, the late CH Metewand Zante at the Championship show in Belfast. We were there with our puppy, Banba, and we saw Zante (or Curly as she was known) . I can still remember the response we had to her, she literally stopped us dead in our tracks - an amazing Afghan, exotic and beautiful and WHAT a mover! Zante was a beautiful bitch and produced some wonderful offspring from her only litter, including Ghibli's dad, the self masked cream, Metewand Kalamkari (Bailey) owned by our good friends Jill Omkhe and Jayne Edwards. Bailey is the image of his mother, with her amazing springy, ground swallowing movement. Six months on from our encounter with Zante... we were at the HAS Ch show in Scotland taking photos for the judge, Roberta Hall. I was taking photos of the class winners and I just couldn't take my lens away from this gorgeous, exotic black masked gold bitch sweeping round the ring and standing as arrogant as you like with the wind blowing through her hair, she had me glued to the spot and when I got home my camera was full of her photographs, I instantly printed one out and put it on my wall (it is still there!) - she was future CH Tulak Risky Business at Wilbus (Sadie) - Ghibli's mum! Lots of research ensued - we found the connections between these stunning bitches that had turned our heads and hearts, and amazingly (or perhaps not), other dogs we admired from the ringside had similar lines. We tentatively approached Sadie's owners, Lesley and Alan Busby of Wilbus, at the SAC show in 2005, I cant tell you how nervous we were - and asked - very nicely - if we could be considered, please, for a puppy if there was ever a litter from this wonderful bitch. You can imagine how we felt when we heard later in early 2006, that there was to be a Sadie litter, and not only that, the prospective daddy was Zante's son, Bailey!
"Excitement" doesn't really cover it...The day the pups were born, I think we nearly had puppies ourselves.
Ghibli reminds us so much of his mother, for his breeders he reminds them of Ch Wilbus Hanukah, his great, great grandmother - unfortunately we never met her, we wish we had. Ghibli has the most amazing, gentle temperament, we have never ever heard one cross word from him, at home or at shows. he thinks other Afghans are just to play with! He spends his days mooching about the garden with his pack mates and loves spreading out with them in front of the woodburner at night, his head resting on my feet. He is very gentle with our bitch (who is the boss in any case!) and he adores her. Ghibli has taken to shows like a duck to water, he loves to show off and especially to move.
His registered name Wilbus Morpheus really tempted us, he had been called Seymour as a baby, but we were not terribly keen on that name. Morpheus is the god of dreams and we seemed to have been dreaming about this boy for some time - However, Ghibli, (pronounced GIBB-LEE) was chosen as his given name. The Ghibli is a desert wind, and is an homage to his beautiful mother who reminds us so much of an exotic desert bloom, as we first saw her, standing facing the wind with her gaze fixed on some distant point on the horizon, dreaming of times past.
Ghibli won his first CC with BOB at 15 months old (plus his JW) at Driffield Championship show 2007 (Judge Jill Cross - Gilari), ending his wonderful day down to the last eight for the hound group. The following week he won the RCC at Belfast (both from Junior). He finished 2007 with a double JW and as Top Junior Afghan UK. Words cannot express how we feel about our amazing "dream boy".
